The NDIS is the Australian Government’s disability insurance scheme, providing funding directly to those eligible to meet specialised needs and requirements when living with a disability as caused by permanent impairment.
It is available to all Australians who meet eligibility criteria and has been designed to improve quality of life and to help personalise how best to support an individual to manage life as they see fit.
Who is eligible for the NDIS?
The NDIS offers financial support to Australians, who live in Australia, between the ages of 9 and 65 who are facing disability due to permanent impairment. We can become impaired in various ways including physically, emotionally, intellectually, neurologically and/or psychosocially.
Financial support from the NDIS can be used in different ways to best support living with a disability. These supports may be disability-specific to the individual or resources for the family or carers to help their loved ones in need.
Eligibility to participate needs to be ascertained based on:
- age: participants need to be between 9 and 65 years of age
- citizenship: participants need to be Australian citizens, or permanent residents or hold a protected special visa
- living: participants need to be permanently living in Australia
- needs: have a disability caused by permanent impairment
What is the process for applying?
Applications to participate in the NDIS are made directly with the NDIS. Applications can be made in writing via an Access Request Form online, or verbally by speaking directly with an NDIS advisor, by calling 1800 800 110. The NDIS also offer additional help with the application process, including interpreter services, help with connecting to relevant community partners and partner offices.
Finding a provider
Once funding is determined and a plan in place, connecting with a high quality, reputable NDIS provider is the assured way to receive the support and requirements needed. The provider is going to play a critical role in ensuring you receive the best of care and service delivery to support and improve quality of life, so it’s important to find a quality match with experience and expertise.
An NDIS provider should be approached like building a trusted, personalised relationship. As an NDIS participant, it’s important to feel you are choosing a provider who will always have your best interests front of mind, can offer the services noted on your plan and have the qualifications and quality to support your disability-related needs.
Aligning to a provider that offers the right flexibility and adaptability to support individual needs is also important as no two people are the same. A quality provider is one who will show friendly adaptability to meet individual requirements and help to improve the quality of life by being attentive and proactive.
